Im setting up a 30 gal tank that will be heavily planted with sand substrate (w/ root tabs), rock, and eucalyptus wood. Im so fed up with looking for a quiet filter. Tried 5-6 different HOB, tried some internal ones, they all hum or vibrate or make other unpleasant noises which is a no-no for a bedroom tank. I want to get a powerhead for water flow/surface agitation and call it a day. Good bacteria is supposed to live everywhere on substrate and decor, so its not like not having a filter will ru... I recently started up a 20 gallon reef tank and scored a nice 850 GPH powerhead with my live rock. The tank is still cycling so I only have a pair of quite small clowns in there currently. They don't seem to be super bothered by the flow and actually swim directly against the current quite a bit. I just don't know if there are long term ramifications of having too much flow such as gill curl or something similar.
